IPRA Sponsors Workshop At Annual UN Conference On Forging Effective Partnerships For Human Security
LONDON, 5 September 2006. The International Public Relations Association (IPRA) will participate in the 59th Annual Department of Public Information (DPI)/Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Conference on “Unfinished Business: Effective Partnerships for Human Security and Sustainable Development.” The 2006 conference will be held at the UN Headquarters in New York City from 6-8 September, with more than 2,500 NGO representatives from 90 countries expected to attend.
The conference will include five plenary sessions, six roundtables and 30 midday workshops. IPRA is sponsoring a workshop on “Nurturing Science/Technology/Engineering/Math Skills in Young Females in Developing and Developed Countries. Organized by IPRA’s Alternate UN Delegate, Pender M. McCarter, Director of Communications and Public Relations at IEEE-USA in Washington, D.C., the workshop will explore the connection between meeting the educational and social needs of young females and maintaining human security. Additionally, the workshop will emphasize how to forge relationships and partnerships to create sustainable projects led by youth; highlight successful science and technology programs in both developing and developed countries; and demonstrate how technology can increase networks among youth.
The five presenters are: from Lagos, Nigeria, Clementina Saduwa, IEEE Women in Engineering Coordinator for Africa, Europe and Middle East; from Washington, D.C., Michelle Tortolani, 2007 President-Elect, Society of Women Engineers; from New York City, Jin In, Manager, Global Action, Girl Scouts of the USA; also, from New York, Monica Shah, Director of Girl Leadership Development, Girl Scouts of the USA; and from New York, Anita Thomas, Main UN Representative, World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, based in London. Leslie Collins, Executive Director of National Engineers Week in Washington, will moderate the workshop. IPRA’s UN Committee is led by Richard Linning, and (in addition to Pender McCarter) includes Barbara Burns, Anthony Murdoch and Charles van der Straten. IPRA is the only public-relations NGO associated with the UN DPI, the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), and the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
