Engineers Make a World of Difference

EWB LogoEWB-USA Potential Tsunami Projects
Asiana Education Development:

This project is actually a series of eight schools and one children’s home reconstruction projects. The existing structures were destroyed during the Tsunami and need to be rebuilt. The projects are located in the eastern and southern regions of Sri Lanka and will need assistance in water supply, sanitation, structure, energy, and rainwater management. Each school will serve approximately 200 – 300 students.

It is anticipated that a university and professional chapter will design all nine structures with the associated water/wastewater, energy, and rainwater systems. Also, included will be the transfer of technology to the local levels.

Thailand :
We have spoken with the Asian Institute of Civil Engineers, UK and Asian section of ASCE. Based on this meeting on January, 2005, EWB-USA anticipates:

  • 10 – 20 projects in smaller villages
  • 3-6 month lead time prior to project initiation (at country request)
  • Project type will be water supply, sanitation, structures (schools and health facilities), energy, and rainwater management.

A project team, scheduled for March departure, will update this situation assessment.

Potential collaborations:

  • Architect Without Borders - We are exploring collaboration efforts with Architects Without Borders as they do their community assessments. Discussions have begun to provide the engineering assistance in community reconstruction.
  • International Medical Relief - Beginning efforts to partner in the formulation and construction of an unnumbered amount of orphanages, which will house the 35,000 orphaned children in Indonesia . IMR scoping teams are in the field at this time.
  • Northwest Medical Teams - Their initial focus has been medical care after the Tsunami. EWB-USA is contacting staff to offer assistance for existing efforts in Lam No.
  • International Rescue Committee - They have been very much involved with relief for Tsunami victims but they have had an extensive involvement in Summatra for some time because of the refugee problems. EWB-USA volunteer was in the field with them in Indonesia for approximately one month. EWB-USA has offered technical assistance for existing efforts.
  • Teachers Without Borders – Working jointly on potential projects to reconstruct not only the physical facilities but to provide staff and programs for rehabilitated schools.
