Create an Engineering Corner
Use
the poster and bookmarks from National Engineers Week to help create
an Engineering Corner for your patrons. In addition to displaying
and distributing materials, you could offer a variety of simple
children's
activities for young library visitors to try, either on-site
or at home.
- Create an engineering art
display. Through photography and paints, children can illustrate technology's
affects on how and where they live, learn and play, from their toys to their computers to
their school supplies.
- Have
a book list for young readers
to share some of their favorite books dealing with technology
and science with others. Collect a sample of engineering-related
mysteries for your adult
patrons, or display a list of available titles in your collection.
- Conduct a poster or essay
contest. Have students write about technology and engineering or have students
work in teams to write and perform plays. Draw themes from science fiction or
re-enactments of actual events, such as the invention of the lightbulb. The young actors
and actresses could portray the engineers and scientists making the technology and
exploration possible.
- Use local or national newspapers
and news magazines to help students find current examples of how technology is affecting
their lives and our world and create a display.
- Challenge children to explore
the future. The National Engineers Week Committee asked engineers what life will
be like in the future. They said artificial body parts will become off-the-shelf items,
workers will commute to offices on man-made planets, and buildings will be 300 stories or
higher in the 22nd century. What are the predictions of the children? Have them create a
book with their predictions and illustrate and display the results.
