IEEE WIE Visit to Qurtoba Middle School, Dubai

By Maryam Al-Thani, IEEE UAE WIE chair

November 2004, Dubai – United Arab Emirates
IEEE WIE organized a visit to a girls’ class at Qurtoba Middle School in Dubai. Maryam Al-Thani, IEEE WIE chair, was presenting her success story to girls how she won GCC honor recognition in math during her Secondary school, 1992. Generally, the discussion theme was an open discussion about why and how it’s important to think and understand what we learned. Also, it was to encourage students to sense the math and its application in real life. Girls enjoyed the session and realized math touches their lives.

Mrs. Sana Mohammed Fares, Mathematics teacher at the school, said, “ I believe that girls/students in general need more motivation and encouragement during their early ages toward engineering approach.” Maryam said ”IEEE WIE is keen to support education in UAE with the help of their active volunteers.”

This visit was part of Engineering Week activities for 2004. At the end of the visit, IEEE WIE distributed some gifts to class students.
