Something that is invaluable is having a contact in the industry in which you are interested -- someone you can talk to who has experience in this area.

MentorNet (http://mentornet.net) is something I just learned about recently since the company that I work for (Agilent Technologies) is actively involved in it. It is an on-line mentoring program -- offering both a forum for group discussions and a one-on-one e-mentoring program. It is a great way for students to get advice and help, and learn from engineers already out in the industry. Mentors are also a good source of encouragement and support. And to top it off, this program is focussed on supporting women and other underrepresented groups in the field of engineering and science.
