Engineers Make a World of Difference

Science Centers - Here's How to Participate

Contact local engineering colleges and businesses and ask them to help sponsor an Engineering Day or Week at the center. Or, take the center to them. Ask to create a display, place signs in public areas, or provide information about the center and hands-on activity ideas for employees' children. Here are a few examples of what others have done.

At the Bakken Library and Museum in Minneapolis (MN) guests got an up-close look at an artificial heart and learned about heart valves. Volunteers helped them make simple valves to take home.

In Washington, D.C., the Smithsonian Institution's National Air & Space Museum and National Museum of American History hosted special theater programs and demonstrations for children and adults.

The Lawrence Hall of Science at the University of California - Berkeley, held a public expo with hands-on electro-magnets, paper airplane construction and a look at the innerworkings of everyday machines.

In Boston, the Museum of Science, National Society of Black Engineers and MIT Alumni Association hosted more than 9,000 visitors in a tribute to African-Americans in engineering.

The Rochester (NY) Museum and Science Center celebrated throughout the week with a life-size engineering board game, steam engines and more.

The American Museum of Science and Energy in Oak Ridge (TN), worked with local engineering societies to sponsor paper airplane making and bridge building.

In Pittsburgh (PA), the Carnegie Science Center, with the help of engineers from local companies and engineering societies, featured two days of special hands-on exhibits. Volunteers ran projects to demonstrate recycling and to take apart small appliances.
