1. Biggest Year Yet For National Engineers Week Future City Competition
School registrations and regions hit record levels for the Future City regional competitions to be held in January 2008: 1,111 schools in 40 regions nationwide.
Future City students work in teams under the guidance of a teacher and a volunteer engineer mentor to design and build a city of tomorrow, present and defend their Future Cities to a panel of engineer judges at the competition, and research and write an essay on a pressing social need. This year's topic – "Keeping Our City Infrastructure Healthy: Using Nanotechnology to Monitor City Structures and Systems" – is straight from the headlines.
Get involved! Volunteer as a mentor to Future City student teams or serve as a judge at a Future City regional competition. Go to www.futurecity.org/competition_region.shtm for dates and locations and contact your local regional coordinator.
More news on Future City will follow in upcoming issues of EWeek ENews. And plan on attending the Future City National Finals at the Hyatt Regency Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., February 18-20, 2008.

IEEE-USA is launching an online engineering video competition for undergraduate engineering students on "How Engineers Make a World of Difference," and will award seven scholarship prizes totaling $10,000 to the undergraduate students who create the most effective 90-second video clips aimed at an 11-to-13-year-old student audience. In addition to the scholarship prizes, winning entries will be shown during National Engineers Week 2008 and displayed on IEEE.tv and SPECTRUM Online. The competition is open to all U.S. undergraduate students in engineering. Entries must be submitted on YouTube by midnight Eastern Time on Friday, 18 January 2008. 3. Live from New York: It's.....The Farnsworth Invention
Heading to New York City for the holidays? Be sure to check out a new play at the Music Box Theatre, 239 West 45th Street, between Broadway and 8th Avenue. This synopsis comes from the theater's website:
It's 1929. Two ambitious visionaries race against each other to invent a device called "television." Separated by two thousand miles, each knows that if he stops working, even for a moment, the other will gain the edge. Who will unlock the key to the greatest innovation of the 20th century: the ruthless media mogul (RCA's David Sarnoff), or the self-taught Idaho farm boy (Philo T. Farnsworth)?
The answer comes to compelling life in The Farnsworth Invention, the new play from Aaron Sorkin, creator of The West Wing. http://www.farnsworthonbroadway.com/
