1. Engineering Television Show to Premiere during Engineers Week
An engineering series comes to prime time when Design Squad premieres for Engineers Week 2007. Design Squad is produced by WGBH-Boston and will air on PBS affiliates.

Design Squad is part reality competition, all engineering, and major fun. The Design Squad audience is 9-12 year olds. Viewers will follow two teams of real high school students, ages 14-17, as they compete using their problem-solving skills to design, construct and test functional, whimsical machines. The viewers witness the ups and downs and inherent drama of the competition and the interpersonal relationships of the teenage contestants. Professional engineers will mentor the teams and be featured in 60-second profiles.

The television show is only part of the campaign. There is an accompanying Web site and outreach program with a toolkit to support volunteer outreach. We're calling on engineers to volunteer by holding Design Squad events such as premiere parties, workshops and more. Keep checking eweek.org for updated informationor click on the Design Squad button and you'll find video clips, meet the cast and hosts and learn more about outreach. This is a terrific opportunity to partner with public television, science centers and others.

Major corporate funding for Design Squad is provided by the National Science Foundation and National Engineers Week Foundation partner the Intel Foundation.

Additional funding is provided by Engineers Week partners Tyco Electronics, National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, Intel Corporation, American Society of Civil Engineers, and IEEE, and by The Harold and Esther Edgerton Family Foundation and Noyce Foundation.

Nominees must have a degree in engineering from a recognized U.S. college or university, or from an equivalent international educational institution. Degrees in engineering technology, science, computer science, and similar disciplines do not qualify; a degree in computer engineering is acceptable. The nomination deadline is approaching. Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
