4. Today is Disability Mentoring Day.
Disability Mentoring Day, October 18, is a national program that promotes career development for students and job-seekers with disabilities through job shadowing and hands-on career exploration. The event is organized by the American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD). According to Andrew Imparato, AAPD President and CEO, "Economic empowerment is at the heart of civil rights for people with disabilities. By building relationships between mentees and mentors working in fields that interest them and building a year-round career exploration program, Disability Mentoring Day helps to create a pipeline of qualified workers and gives people with disabilities greater direction and motivation." With leadership, coordination and resource materials from AAPD, local communities around the country organize activities that bring students and employers together for informational sessions about career opportunities and one-on-one mentoring with volunteers at public and private places of employment. The American Association of People with Disabilities (AAPD) is the nation's largest cross-disability membership organization. The National Engineers Week Foundation would be interested in hearing and sharing stories of engineers mentoring students with disabilities. Send your news to eweek@nspe.org Subject line: AAPD

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
