1. Design Squad Back in Action
It's go time! The Design Squad-ers are back on set. Production has started filming 13 new and exciting challenges with eight new high school kids. The first challenge? Building cardboard furniture for an IKEA showroom! To find out what they built, you'll have to tune in to Design Squad's second season on local PBS-TV stations in Winter/Spring 2008.

For the engineering musician in you, explore sound by playing String Things, the new musical game. Learn about vibrations and wavelengths as you write a song, add a beat, and play it back.

Just a reminder to continue to check out upcoming Design Squad trainings and events in Fall 2007 and Winter/Spring 2008.Fall events are already scheduled in Boston, at Clemson (South Carolina) University thanks to NCEES, and at the SWE national conference in Nashville, Tennessee.

If you'd like to receive the Design Squad newsletter to keep you connected to production updates, engineering resources you can use in classroom, after-school, and event settings, and tips for using Design Squad during Engineers Week and beyond, subscribe here.

2. Cyberchase on the Road
The interactive Cyberchase exhibit – developed by the Children's Museum of Houston – is on the road. You can chase it down this summer through September at the Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York. You'll have to run to New York City to catch it at the New York Hall of Science beginning in October. The exhibit is a great opportunity to partner with the venues and PBS to develop and participate in outreach events. For ideas, contact Laura Gallagher, gallagherl@thirteen.org.

4. In Local News
In addition to the online report, Engineers Week headquarters continues to receive local news, like this from IBM.

On February 20, IBM volunteers in Memphis, Tennessee, partnered with the management of the new, state of the art, FedEx Forum. The Memphis Grizzlies, a National Basketball Association (NBA) team, claim the FedEx Forum as their new home. The excitement of bringing such a team to Memphis and in building such a "wow" new building in the midst of downtown Memphis caught a lot of media attention. The decision to partner and bring students to the FedEx Forum was designed to not only tell the students about amazing engineering feats but to show them the results in an environment in which they had a lot of interest.

In total, 550 sixth through tenth grade minority students from the Memphis Academy of Science & Engineering attended the program. The students were seated in prime seats with special speakers as well as students participating in the program from the floor of the Forum. Engineers involved in various aspects of the Forum spoke to the students and pointed out or demonstrated engineering feats in the facility. IBM volunteers led discussions with the students around engineering careers. Students were involved in introducing each speaker from the Forum floor. Lots of questions arose and the group engaged in a lively, informative discussion.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
