2. In Local News
More than 240 ExxonMobil employee volunteers will share their time and experiences as engineers through the end of March. They will reach more than 2,700 middle school students through Introduce a Girl to Engineering programs at 14 company locations in the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico. This year, the company implemented a new tool - the Intranet - to generate enthusiasm and excitement for the program. By creating an Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day Weblink, accessible by all employees, downloadable templates, guidelines, experiments, and everything were available to conduct a successful Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. The effort also relied upon the experience of employee-volunteers who participated in the program in prior years to serve as a central coordinating committee to lead the effort at their respective locations.

On Wednesday, May 3, the women engineers at Judith Nitsch Engineering, Inc., Boston, Massachusetts, and Harvard University are planning another great event for girls from 6th to 12th grade to learn about engineers and advanced degrees at Harvard! One panel will include a woman engineer with her MBA from Harvard, another engineer has her law degree from Harvard, and another has her MS in civil engineering. We will also use GPS technology to do a treasure hunt on the Harvard Law School quad. Contact jnitsch@jnei.com

At Richland School in Los Angeles, California, an engineer visited the fourth grade and talked about what engineers do and showed a video that the group really liked (Engineering is for Everyone). Then the kids teamed up to do the ZOOM into Engineering paper tower project. Of the 11 teams, 3 of them were successful--one team made a 92 cm tower in under 5 minutes; it was still standing when we called "Time!" 10 minutes later. The teacher took lots of pictures and plans to use some of them for the 4th grade bulletin board project next month.  erlesan@earthlink.net
