1. Join in the Global Marathon
Join us in a live, worldwide forum on topics for, by and about current and future generations of women in engineering. The event is the third annual Global Marathon For, By and About Women in Engineering beginning at noon EDT on March 22 and ending at noon the next day. March is Women's History Month. The marathon is supported by Lenovo and Verizon Business.
For the first time, the marathon is co-chaired by Fran O'Sullivan, Senior Vice President, Product Group, Lenovo, and Former NASA Astronaut and First American Woman in Space Sally Ride. O' Sullivan explains, "With an emphasis on mentorship, this vital worldwide program connects current and future generations of women – and men too – who aspire to achieve excellence in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. This is a race without a finish line, so we must continue to work together, do more, and build upon our efforts every year."
Marathon sessions are accessible by phone and Internet and there is no cost or pre-registration for participants.
Marathon topics are presented in half-hour formats. Some examples:
- Volunteers and others who work with pre-college girls can access information from studies of teen and 'tween girls' social and academic concerns.
- They can learn how best to mentor and influence girls in a range of age groups and to work with school guidance counselors.
- Young professionals can get career tips from more senior professionals around the world.
- Girls can talk via telephone with personalities from the television shows Cyberchase and Design Squad and hear from women engineers in a variety of careers.
We hope you will join us and tell others about the marathon. Click here to see the schedule.

3. Design Squad Continues to Roll Out
As the nation celebrated Engineers Week, Design Squad debuted on many PBS stations across the country. You can watch the premiere episode, "The Need for Speed," online. Design Squad has a rolling nationwide schedule, so premiere dates and times vary at each PBS station. To find out when Design Squad is airing in your city, please contact your local station. Click here to learn behind-the-scenes information about the cast, take an online quiz, see the premiere episode, and watch a video profile of Pete Bethune, a mechanical engineer who built a high-speed bio-diesel powerboat. And there's much more to come! The Parents & Educators, and Engineers sections of the Web site will launch in early March. Soon you can download the Design Squad Educator's Guide as well as the D-Squad Pro Files of real engineers.
Design Squad trainings and events continue! An updated list will be posted on the full Web site in March. Educator training (that includes volunteers!) is scheduled for the National Afterschool Association Conference, March 20-23 in Phoenix, Arizona; for the National Society of Black Engineers National Conference on March 30 in Columbus, Ohio; National Science Teachers Association March 30 in St. Louis, Missouri. Contact Outreach Coordinator Ellen Robinson at ellen_robinson@wgbh.org for more details.
And on March 10, Design Squad hits the Museum of Science in Boston. The event is called Build Some Fun and celebrates the creative world of engineering with a special event produced in collaboration with WGBH. Kids of all ages can try hands-on activities featured in WGBH's newest kids' series: Design Squad, Curious George, and FETCH! with Ruff Ruffman.

4. Local News, from Manhattan (New York) to Manhattan (Kansas)
Girl Scout troops in Liverpool, New York, Thousand Oaks, California, Urbana, Iowa, and Charleston, West Virginia, recently received Engineers Week grants for everything from Cyberchase parties to working on Try-It badges. Grants are still available and can be used to participate in the Global Marathon For, By and About Women in Engineering. Read more here.
The University of Houston, Texas, Engineering Alumni Association hosted a reception/program on February 20 to celebrate how engineers make a difference and to support University of Houston engineering students who are future engineers. About 200 engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff and supporters enjoyed the reception/program where 32 UH engineering students and three student organizations received cash awards from the UH Petroleum Engineering Advisory Board, Williams Brothers Construction Co, Inc., FMC Technologies, ExxonMobil Women Engineer UH Alumni, Shell Oil Company, Fluor Corporation, Bayer, Grant Prideco, Kalsi Engineering Inc., Reliant Energy, UH Engineering Alumni Association, and TCB/AECOM. In addition to award presentations, the "Show Me The Engineer" game show (spin-off of "Show Me The Money" TV show) was performed by alumni and students. Also, the finale of the "Engineers Make a Difference" speech contest was performed by FMC Technologies (sponsor), alumni, and student organizations. Contact Cynthia Oliver Coleman at pengrcoc@cs.com for more details.
More than thirty high school students from six Manhattan, New York, girls' schools joined with Google engineers to explore careers paths, products, and possibilities. For the second year in a row, the National Coalition of Girls' Schools partnered with Google as both groups aimed to broaden awareness of diverse opportunities within the field of engineering. The girls and their Google lunchtime mentors discussed the exciting tools of technology that draw many to the field of engineering. Other activities included hands-on exploration of Google Earth, Google Calendar, and new products in the making. Contact is Whitney Ransome at National Coalition of Girls Schools.
A one-day program on February 24 at Kansas State University in Manhattan, Kansas, showed middle school girls how an affinity for animals can lead to a career as a scientist or engineer. AAH!, the All 4 Animal Health event, gave girls in the sixth through eighth grades from across Kansas a look at where science and engineering intersect with animal health. The girls worked in small groups led by K-State graduate and upper-level undergraduate veterinary medicine students. Hands-on activities showed how scientists and engineers help make animals' lives easier and healthier. Teachers were invited to observe and find activities to use in their classrooms. The program is sponsored by K-State's Girls Researching Our World. For more information, call Susan Arnold Christian at 785-532-6152 or visit here.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
