2. Cyberchase Briefing March 19
The sixth season of CYBERCHASE focuses on math in building and sports. Targeted to ages 8 to 12, each episode delivers positive messages about math by teaching concepts in a fun way that kids can understand, centered on a core math standard developed by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Developed by Engineers Week partner THIRTEEN (WNET-PBS NYC), the Builders' Math Activity Kit contains a DVD with copies of Builders' Math themed television episodes and a CD-ROM with hands-on activities tied to each episode. Volunteers can receive free kits by agreeing to participate in one hour-long teleconference training session. The first training is scheduled for March 19 at 3 PM EST.

Registration deadline is March 12. Please send the following information to eweek@nspe.org to reserve your spot in the telecon training session and receive your copy of the CYBERCHASE Builders' MathActivity Kit: name, organization, mailing address, phone, number of kits requested (one per volunteer), how you plan to use this resource and how many students you plan to work with. Put CYBERCHASE KIT in the subject line. Registered participants will receive Builders' Math and dial-in numbers prior to March 19.

3. Newest tool in the kit
As an educator, parent, engineering student or engineer volunteer you can make a huge difference in children's attitudes about engineering, technology, math, and science. Studies show that many kids just need someone to add a "spark" and affect their attitudes in a positive way. In 2008, the National Engineers Week Foundation wants to reach 2,008 middle schools and student groups with information about www.discoverengineering.org. You can help by having a "Launch Party." Click for party information and also let us know what groups participated by adding your group to our roster. For your party, simply connect to Discover Engineering online to view the videosor order a DVD to leave with schools, libraries, and clubs. The DVD, including the three videos, is only $5 and includes a companion booklet with hands-on activities. Order the package online or by calling the EWEEK fulfillment house, 412-741-1393.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
