1. Go to the Movies. Win a T-Shirt
Promotional slides celebrating women in engineering will be appearing at about 200 movie theaters through this month. If you spot one, let us know and we’ll send you an Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day t-shirt. Include date, theater, feature, sponsoring organization, and your reaction to the ad. 2. Federal Engineers to be Honored
The National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE) will announce the Federal Engineer of the Year Award (FEYA) at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C., on February 24. The award recognizes the engineer who has made the most outstanding contribution to the advancement and practice of engineering in federal government. The 26th Annual FEYA nominees are reviewed for engineering achievements, education, registration, continuing education, and civic and humanitarian activities, among other criteria. 3. The Future Approaches
It's official: 32 teams of middle school students are set to travel to Washington for the National Engineers Week Future City Competition National Finals, February 21-23. 4. News You Can Use
The San Diego ASCE Younger Member Forum is organizing “Engineering Day” at the Grossmont Mall on February 26. Contact Jason Lemons at jlemons@sd.demail.com.
The Boston, Massachusetts, Museum of Science expects large numbers of families and students will visit over the school recess which falls during Engineers Week. The museum will be offering hands-on engineering activities with 20 minute Design Challenges going on in the Current Science and Technology Center from 10:00am - 12:00pm. Dr. Harry Armen, President of ASME, will keynote the annual Engineers Week Dinner sponsored by the Engineers Joint Committee of Long Island, New York, on February 23. In Western Michigan the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers will partner with ASCE to provide educational opportunities for the public and local elementary school students during Engineers Week. There will be educational hands-on activities related to various engineering fields at the Van Andel Museum Center on February 19, 21, 23 and 25 and 26. The 2004 program engaged 400 students. For the fifth consecutive year, ThinkPlace™ presented by IBM® will host Engineers Week activities at INNOVENTIONS at Epcot®. INNOVENTIONS is a unique attraction filled with hands-on, interactive exhibits. Guests discover how the latest in science and technology can simplify and enhance their lives. Anchoring EWeek festivities will be the tremendously successful Guest Speaker Series that highlights how math, science, common sense, and experience can make an ordinary problem-solver an extraordinary engineer. This year’s program will feature engineers from The Boeing Company, International Business Machines Corporation, Lutron Electronics Co., Inc., The Society of the Plastics Industry, Inc., Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., and Walt Disney World® Parks and Resorts.
EWeek activities within ThinkPlace will include mind challenges and experiments, which emphasize the importance of math and science and motivate kids of all ages to want to learn more. (February 20-26, 2005) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers,
engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business.
In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and
now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies
and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding
of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in
math, science, and engineering as a career option.
