1. Join the Party
Starting February 12, "you kids" can party at a "crazy cool" new engineering portal site for middle school students and educators. Visitors learn how to make gross, nasty water into drinkable, build their own solar cookers, andsave the world from running out of energy! The site is www.discoverengineering.org and is a total do-over of the current site. Not only are there a variety of activities and lots of information about engineering, but the new site serves as a portal to view three new videos. The videosfocus on a water filtration project for a Mexican orphanage by Engineers for a Sustainable World, the Solar Decathalon, and designing parts of a new online multiplayer game. The videos are also available on a DVD available after February 15.

In the meantime, you can be the most popular "kid" in your class during a school visit. Check with the teacher about hosting a pizza party. This is also a great activity for scouting programs, etc. You can use the empty pizza boxes to create solar cookers! For lessons plans to accompany the videos, includingmaking an oven from a pizza box, click here. Have your group watch the Solar Decathalon video online, too.

The awardees receive their prizes in ceremonies in Washington, D.C., on February 19. Additionally they will participate in a public forum with 7th and 8th grade finalists of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition. The forum will take place on February 19 at 1:00 p.m. EST at the Keck Building of the National Academies, located at 500 Fifth Street N.W., Washington, D.C.
