1. Engineers Will Be Recognized
The National Academy of Engineering will announce and recognize a number of international awards recipients at its annual NAE Awards Ceremony and Dinner on February 21 in Washington, D.C. Winners will be posted at www.eweek.org that day. Awards to be presented include The Charles Stark Draper Prize, The Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize, and The Bernard M. Gordon Prize. The Draper Prize honors engineers whose contributions have significantly impacted society by improving the quality of life, providing the ability to live freely and comfortably, or permitting the access to information. The Russ Prize acknowledges bioengineering achievements worldwide that have improved the human condition or had a significant impact on society. The Gordon Prize recognizes new modalities and experiments in education that develop effective engineering leaders. For more information about the prizes visit www.nae.edu.

3. News You Can Use
Girls Researching Our World (GROW), the Women in Engineering & Science Program, and the Multicultural Engineering Program at Kansas State University will be hosting an event for 50-60 middle school students. EEK! (Exploring Engineering at K-State) is being sponsored by funds from the National Science Foundation and Sprint. The day starts with a pizza lunch sponsored by the College of Engineering. After an opening session, K-State students from a variety of engineering and science disciplines will lead hands-on activities and campus tours for the middle school students. Contact is Susan Arnold Christian at 785-532-6152 or suarnold@ksu.edu. Visit GROW at www.k-state.edu/grow

IBM engineers at the TJ Watson Center in New York are sponsoring The IBM EWeek Design Challenge by creating a fictional science museum called the “Watson Hall of Science and Engineering.” Middle schools teams will design and construct interactive exhibits, including a model and a poster display, which will convey some significant scientific or engineering principle in an educational and entertaining way. This year, the teams will still be evaluated by a panel of judges with the twist being that the judges will be the first visitors to the fictional museum. The Watson Hall of Science and Engineering seeks exhibits from engineering and science disciplines such as mechanics (pulleys, levers, strength of structures); physics (gravity, conservation of momentum, light phenomena, sound); electricity (batteries, LEDs, circuits) and materials (strength, properties). See details on this creative competition. go to http://www.watson.ibm.com/leo/EWeekDC2005.html. IBM contact is Lisa Costantino at lacosta@us.ibm.com or 914-945-2822.

IBM in Southfield, Michigan, partners with automotive clients to visit Detroit public schools. The auto industry is the largest employer in southeastern Michigan. The automotive industry is all about engineering, innovation, and new product and process development. Teams make 50-minute classroom presentations and provide hands-on experiments. About 100 engineers will work with 1,200 or more students from March 14-21. Contact is Ellen Sasson at 248-552-5630 or esasson@us.ibm.com.

Engineering Expo has been part of Engineers Week at the University of South Florida’s College of Engineering in Tampa since 1973. The college strengthens its relationship with schools, private corporations, and the community through the event. Engineering Expo is considered one of the oldest and largest student-run events of its kind in the southeast. Visitors have the opportunity to participate in contests where they gain some hands-on engineering experience. Some of the activities include Fun with Physics, Chemical Magic Show, Laser Light Show, Robots, Biomedical Engineering Marvels, Engineering Boy Scout Merit Badge program, and much more. The event runs February 18 – 19 and is free. See more information, visit http://expo.eng.usf.edu/index.php or contact Dr. Paul McCright at mccright@eng.usf.edu or Anthony Hildoer at ahildoer@eng.usf.edu.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 20-26, 2005) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
