1. Get Inventive with Cyberchase!
Register by noon on January 26 to participate in a free "Cyberchase" teleconference training on January 30 at 3pm EST. See registration details below
Cyberchase is an action-packed math television adventure for young children produced by Thirteen/WNET PBS-NY; the National Engineers Week Foundation is an informal education outreach partner. The new television season focuses on the inventing process. The National Engineers Week Foundation will host a teleconference for engineers with the Cyberchase outreach staff to discuss how to use the brand new Cyberchase Inventive Innovations activity guide with children in grades two through five.
All participants will receive a free copy of the guide, which was developed to help formal and informal educators use the appeal of the "Cyberchase" television series to capture kids' interest in math. On January 30th, participants should have the Inventive Innovations activity guide in hand to get the most out of the briefing.
Participants should contact Anne Squire at asquire@nspe.org, with "Cyberchase, January 30" in the subject line, to register for the call and receive the dial-in information. Registrations will be accepted until 12 noon EST on January 26th, to allow time for the kits to arrive by January 30th. There is no cost to participate in the call.

Cyberchase/Engineers Week outreach is unique in connecting mathematics to engineering for young students. The guides come equipped with new television episodes on DVD and exciting corresponding activities that will give you an opportunity to help children explore the many links among math, science, engineering and the inventing process. Using math as the foundation for your work, you will learn how to develop (and play!) musical instruments, design alarm buzzers, build better "bunny copters" and gliders, and demonstrate balloon ski lifts, as we discuss how to implement and extend the lessons of the activities to encourage kids in your local community to get inventive. You'll also learn how to develop partnerships with your local PBS affiliate. To see when "Cyberchase" airs in your community check local television listings.
Summary: On January 30th, participants should have the Inventive Innovations activity guide in hand to get the most out of the briefing. Registrations will be accepted until 12 noon EST on January 26th, to allow time for the kits to arrive by January 30th. There is no cost to participate in the call.

3. In Local News
February 24 - 25 visit the Museum of Science & Industry in Chicago to see what area FIRST robotics teams (ages 6-18) have been creating! Student-designed, built, and programmed robots will be demonstrated using design challenges developed by FIRST. Come see robots from past and present FIRST competitions. Topics include oceanography, nanotechnology, and alternative energy sources.
Visitors will not only get a chance to see and interact with these robots, but will also get a chance to help build and 'train' a robot to perform different functions! While there, learn how you can get involved in FIRST robotics events! These family-friendly exhibitions are included with the cost of museum admission. For more information, please contact RoboticsLady@gmail.com.
FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that build not only science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills. For more information about FIRST, click here. RoboTIP (ROBOtics Team Incubator Program) is a community based educational initiative committed to supporting the creation of competition quality, sustainable robotics teams. For more information about either FIRST or RoboTIP, please contact RoboticsLady@gmail.com
Explore nanotechnology with middle school FIRST LEGO League competition robotics teams as they demonstrate their solutions to the 2006 "Challenge: Nano Quest". See robots designed, built, and programmed by kids to autonomously solve nanotechnology challenges. Review nanotechnology research performed by these teams. It all takes place February 24 as part of the Engineers Week activities planned for the IIT Rice, Chicago campus. For more information, contact RoboticsLady@gmail.com
The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology (SDSM&T), Rapid City, will celebrate its 30th year of Engineers Weeks. The faculty, staff, and students join forces with practicing engineers of the Black Hills Chapter of South Dakota Engineering Society, the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers, scientists, and K-12 teachers, to show students that science, math and engineering are fun and exciting. Click here for a listing of events.
For the past two years, the Latina Outreach Working Group (part of the Intel Latino Network) in Arizona has hosted "Hermanas: Design Your Future" conference reaching over 200+ Hispanic female students and introducing them to engineering. For 2007, the plan is to target 150 girls in grades 6-12, and the conference is scheduled to be held at Estrella Mountain Community College in March. Contact is Gabriela_A_Gonzalez@hotmail.com
At Ohio State University in Columbus the Society of Women Engineers and Women in Engineering will host 225 girls in grades 3-6 on February 24 for Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Participants will have fun learning about engineering by doing hands-on activities and will hear from engineering students and industry professionals about what they can do with an education in engineering. Information and applications are online. This OSU event is proudly sponsored by Battelle. For more information contact Kristina Kennedy at kennedy.443@osu.edu.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
