2. Sponsors Make it Possible
The programs and materials offered by the National Engineers Week Foundation are made possible by grants from many organizations. Engineering-based companies provide support to honor their engineers and to recognize the importance of outreach. 3. Big Weeks Ahead for Future City Competition
On January 22, Future City Competitions take place in San Francisco, California; Fort Wayne, Indiana; Reno, Nevada; Boston, Massachusetts; Brooklyn, New York; Columbus, Ohio; Phoenix, Arizona; Aiken, South Carolina; Houston, Texas; and Seattle, Washington. It’s also a big day for Future City Competitions on January 29. Students in and around Buffalo, New York; Los Angeles; Chicago; Denver; Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Manhattan, Kansas; Baltimore, Maryland; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Minneapolis, Minnesota; Piscataway, New Jersey; Raleigh, North Carolina; Oklahoma City; Philadelphia; St. Louis< Missouri; Dallas/Ft. Worth, Texas; and Washington, D.C., will compete. Students in the Detroit area compete in Livonia on January 27.

4. News You Can Use
Many Engineers Week committees work with local newspapers to create special Engineers Week supplements. A number of newspapers have already requested information. Is your local newspaper one of them? Some of the newspapers in touch with the National Engineers Week Foundation are The Richmond (Virginia) Times Dispatch, San Jose ( California) Mercury News, The Oklahoman from Oklahoma City, Pittsburgh’s Post Gazette, Omaha, Nebraska’s World Herald and The Arizona Republic in Phoenix.

In New York state, IEEE’s Mid-Hudson Section is sponsoring an engineering day on February 23 at the State University of New York - New Paltz. About 500 high school students are expected for events that will include hands-on engineering projects and a session with local engineers who will answer questions about engineering careers and education.

The San Fernando Valley ( California) Engineers’ Council will host a symposium, “Autonomous and Robotic Vehicle Technologies,” from February 24-26. The symposium is presented in cooperation with IEEE, AIAA, SME, AIAA, ASM and Lockheed Martin.

Elsewhere in California, the Inland Empire Council of Engineers and Scientists will host a banquet and lecture, “High Speed MagLev Trains for Southern California.” The event is at the University of Redlands on February 23. Contact is Bruce Springer at springerb@asme.org.

In Ohio, the University of Akron’s Women in Engineering Program is taking a team approach to Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day. Teams are comprised of three women: faculty member, professional engineer, and engineering student. They will visit with seventh grade girls and incorporate activities using the Engineers Week Slinkys®. Contact is Halle Jones Capers at halle@uakron.edu.

Engineers Week in Boston is scheduled for the week of February 28- March 4, 2005. Events include a career night, morning forum and the luncheon. Events attract both the novice and experienced engineers around the Boston area. Career Night provides an opportunity to meet hundreds of possible potential candidates that encompass all engineering disciplines. The luncheon is the premier engineering event in Boston where over 400 both public and private sector professionals gather together. The Capital District Engineers Week Celebration around Albany, New York, will offer over 50 seminars, an Order of the Engineer ceremony, programs for high school and college students, a model bridge construction competition for area high school students, and a dinner. The seminars will include sessions on civil, transportation, geotechnical, and environmental engineering, as well as on structures, construction techniques, and infrastructure security. Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 20-26, 2005) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
