1.  National Academy of Engineering Announces 2007 Engineering Honors
The National Academy of Engineering (NAE) has just announced the 2007 recipients of the engineering profession's highest honors. The awards recognize three achievements that have revolutionized how people use information, opened new frontiers of medical research, and guided promising engineers into leadership roles.

  • Timothy J. Berners-Lee will receive the prestigious Charles Stark Draper Prize -- a $500,000 annual award that honors engineers whose accomplishments have significantly benefited society -- "for developing the World Wide Web."
  • Yuan-Cheng "Bert" Fung will receive the Fritz J. and Dolores H. Russ Prize -- a $500,000 biennial award recognizing engineering achievement that significantly improves the human condition -- "for the characterization and modeling of human tissue mechanics and function leading to prevention and mitigation of trauma."
  • Harold S. Goldberg, Jerome E. Levy, and Arthur W. Winston of the Gordon Institute at Tufts University will share the Bernard M. Gordon Prize -- a $500,000 award issued annually that recognizes innovation in engineering and technology education -- "for the development of a multidisciplinary graduate program for engineering professionals who have the potential and the desire to be engineering leaders."

The prizes will be presented at a gala dinner in Washington, D.C., on February 20 during Engineers Week. Click here for the official news release about the NAE Prizes.

2. President Bush Sends Message for Future City Anniversary
President George Bush has sent greetings recognizing the 15th anniversary of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition.

"To keep our country ready to confront and overcome the challenges of the future, we must encourage our young people to study math, science, and engineering. For 15 years, the Future City Competition has provided a forum for students to learn about the possibilities of these important fields and to showcase their skills by designing a model city."

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) North Carolina Section plans to run a statewide radio ad campaign mentioning Engineers Week across North Carolina. The ad campaign will include approximately seven radio stations in Asheville, Greensboro, Charlotte, Raleigh, and Wilmington.

The NC-ASCE Section also has a Section Engineers Week coordinator and coordinators for each of the five ASCE Branches to help members and outside people get started with volunteer activities such as visiting elementary or middle schools. Contact is jreeves@smeinc.com.

On February 23 girls in grades 9 - 11 are invited to spend a day to discover life as a female college student in science or engineering at Kansas State University. High School girls will be paired up and shadow a K-State female science or engineering student for the day. They will attend class, explore campus and attend a luncheon together.

Students as young as preschool age through high school ages can be engineers for a day at Boise, Idaho, State University College of Engineering on February 2 and 3. Children can design a bridge, build a rocket racer and operate a lunar rover robot. Contact is mktaylor@micron.com.

INCOSE (International Council of Systems Engineers) Midwest Gateway Chapter is looking to build a planning committee.   If you are near the Wentzville, MO, area and would like to be part of a planning committee to celebrate EWEEK 2007, send an e-mail to marcos.chu@incose.org.

Founded in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers, Engineers Week (February 18-24, 2007) is celebrated annually by thousands of engineers, engineering students, teachers, and leaders in government and business. In 1988, the National Engineers Week consortium expanded its scope and now includes more than 100 engineering, scientific, and education societies and major corporations dedicated to enhancing the public understanding of the engineering profession and to promoting pre-college interest in math, science, and engineering as a career option.
