Future City Competition Receives Connect America "Partner of the Year" Award
Award Presented at National Conference on Volunteering and Leadership
SEATTLE (June 19, 2006)—The National Engineers Week Future City Competition, an educational program designed to inspire future engineers, was named recipient of Connect America Partner of the Year today. The announcement took place at the National Conference on Volunteering and Service in Seattle.
Connect America is a program of the Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network. Connect America is a national movement of more than 125 leading nonprofit organizations, businesses and federal agencies striving to bridge differences and create new synergy around social issues.
The Connect America Partner of the Year Award was established in 2000 to honor the outstanding performance of Connect America partners. This year’s award recipient is the National Engineers Week Future City Competition, which is based in Alexandria, Va.
The Future City Competition’s mission is to provide an educational outreach program that highlights and works with the engineering profession. It involves creating a “Future City” where a team of middle school students, working with an engineer-mentor, design of a city of tomorrow using computer software; building a physical scale model using recycled materials; writing an essay on an assigned engineering challenge; and conducting a presentation before a panel of judges.
The program, founded in 1992, reaches more than 1,100 registered schools each year, touching the lives of more than 30,000 middle school students through a network of 7,500 volunteers. For more information on the program, go to http://www.futurecity.org.
The mission of the National Engineers Week Future City Competition is to provide a fun and exciting educational engineering program for seventh- and eighth-grade students that combines a stimulating engineering challenge with a "hands-on" application to present their vision of a city of the future.
