Workplace: Engineering Diversity
The Phoenix, Ariz., chapter of the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) is striving to boost the numbers of Hispanics in the engineering and high-tech sectors. "Having a diverse engineering work force provides different perspectives from which to tackle very difficult technical problems," says Danny Cartagena, an Intel product development engineer and a member of SHPE. The governing board of Phoenix's SHPE chapter recently convened to discuss ways to facilitate outreach to students and enhance fund-raising efforts for scholarships. The group already partners with K-12 schools to sponsor engineering-based events, such as a minority engineering camp at elementary schools to "plant the seed early," according to civil engineer Michael Cano. SHPE also supplies mentors and speakers to South Mountain Community College and Arizona State University at Tempe, which features an engineering program and math-science honors program for minorities. SHPE member Raimundo Dovalina Jr., a municipal traffic engineering supervisor, has been mentoring a freshman high school student for four years through a program called Boys Hope Girls Hope. "Our kids need to know that engineering is very rewarding career and that if we did it so can they."
