Presentation Overview

Learn about the various WISE mentoring programs available to k-12 students who are interested in learning about science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) careers. Sarah Shirk, Director of the WISE pre-college outreach programs will give an overview of how to apply for mentoring opportunities. In addition, she will examine the change in STEM workforce demographics by gender in the last decade.

Sarah Shirk, MPH, is Director of Pre-College Outreach for the UIC Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) Program. Her passion is to research and advocate for gender equity in all realms with a focus on STEM careers. She accomplishes this goal with outreach activities targeted to k-12 students in underserved communities. She currently serves on the STEM Equity Pipeline Illinois State Leadership team and the Champions Board for the Midwest Girls Collaborative Project. In addition, she is project director of the GEM-SET Mentoring for Success program funded by the U.S. Department of Education and various WISE Outreach Programs funded by the Motorola Foundation, Caterpillar Foundation, and U.S. Department of Labor
