SWE - Phoenix has for several years supported the Phoenix Regional Future Cities Competition.  The winner of this regional competition (final competition held on Saturday January 21) moves on to Washington DC to compete in the National competition that is held during E-Week in February.  SWE-PHX provides a "Society Award" chosen and awarded to the school having the "Best Integrated Design" and provides a judging team that judges all aspects of the competition.  This includes the computer model, essay, abstract and formal presentation.

Discover"E" Classroom Outreach

The Discover"E" outreach program has been a part of the activities for National Engineers Week for more than 15 years.  This program matches up engineers with teachers who have requested that an engineer come to speak to their class(es). The presentations may take place during EWeek or at any time agreed upon with the teacher.

Locally, this effort is coordinated by the Silicon Valley Engineering Council (SVEC).  Approximately 350 local teachers have requested classroom presentations, so this is a huge undertaking with significant impact.  As the lead organization  for EWeek this year, SWE is making an extra effort to encourage our members to participate in Discover"E", and the SVEC is counting on us to fill many of the teacher requests.  This all ties in with the national EWeek program "Connecting Educators  to Engineering."

Doing classroom outreach is a lot of fun.  Even with the large number of engineers in Silicon Valley, most students do not really know what engineers do or how engineering impacts the  world around them.  It's great to be able to go into a classroom, do a fun/interesting activity, and perhaps spark an interest in the students you meet there.

In addition to encouraging outreach in general, SWE is also trying to target outreach to local schools with a high percentage of minorities.  But whether you would like to speak at one of these schools, your local school (perhaps where your  own child is a student), or one of the other schools which have submitted a speaker request, please take the time to get involved.  In fact, invite a friend or co-worker to participate as well, and you can provide mutual moral support.  Schools in  our community are awaiting your arrival!

Northwestern University’s SWE Student Chapter. We’ve noticed that there are a lot of upperclassmen majoring in economics, math, physics, biology, chemistry, environmental studies etc. who end up taking a few engineering classes for their major and realize that they really love engineering. However, they discovered their love for engineering “too late” for them to be able to transfer into the school of engineering and still graduate within their four undergrad years so they decide not to transfer.

So for EWeek 2006 our chapter has decided to do outreach on campus to our underclassmen by having a booth set up at our student union. We plan on having a few fun engineering trivia/games at the booth. Also, we have a Teaching Assistant for our freshman year Basic Engineering course (all engineering freshmen are required to take this course) who is a Mechanical Engineering graduate student and is on the show Beauty and the Geek 2 which airs on the WB. On Wednesday and Thursday he has agreed to volunteer at our booth for “Meet the Geek.” He is willing to put himself there for publicity and of course to answer any questions about the engineering curriculum that he can. His undergrad was philosophy so this caters well to encouraging students in the arts and sciences to pursue technical degrees.

We have also invited NSBE (National Society of Black Engineers) and SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) to help us by having members of their student groups volunteer at the booth as well.

So in a nutshell:
Who: SWE, NSBE, SHPE and also featuring Beauty and the Geek star Joe Block
What: Engineering Awareness Booth
When: EWeek Monday-Friday 11am-4pm
Where: Northwestern University Norris Student Center
Why: To promote engineering so that people, mainly our underclassmen in the college of arts and sciences, know what engineering is and what opportunities can be found by pursuing a technical degree in engineering.

If you have any questions/concerns, please do not hesitate to email me back at s-salahi@northwestern.edu.

Sara Salahi

Indiana

Purdue University

February 18th, the Purdue Student Section of SWE will be hosting the first Indiana High School Rube Goldberg Machine Contest. In the Rube Goldberg Machine Contest, groups are given an elementary challenge, this contest's task is selecting, draining, crushing, and recycling an aluminum can. But instead of just "solving" the problem, students have to make the solution as complicated and as convoluted as possible. In fact, the more steps - there's a minimum of twenty - the better the Rube Goldberg Machine. This contest has been hosted for high schools in many states but had never been offered in Indiana, the birthplace of the Rube Goldberg Contest!  Purdue SWE with the sponsorship of Johnson & Johnson will be hosting 15 teams of four high school students from around Indiana in a day of judging, tours, and awards.  Teams have been preparing for this contest since December and all machines promise to be both creative and brilliant.

I'm taking two women engineering students (one freshman and one senior) from Princeton University to speak to the AP chemistry class at South Brunswick High School, South Brunswick, NJ.  Students who ask good questions get an E-week slinky thrown at them!  This is about the sixth year that we've visited this class...and typically one or two women students pursue engineering each year!

University of Cincinnati and I would like to tell you about our e-week festivities that we have. All the different engineering organizations form teams and compete against each other in various events. Some of the events are engineering related and other are not.  There is a date auction that takes place on Friday Feb. 24th at the Mad Frog with all proceeds going to children’s hospital. The hallmark event is the semi-formal banquet that happens on the Saturday at the end of the week. UC engineering alumni are invited to attend this banquet that is held at music hall. That is a short summary of how we celebrate e-week at UC if you have any questions please feel free to email me.
