TARDEC
Partners with Club Adventure Summer Camp
On
June 15th, campers from Club Adventure, Selfridge Air National Guard Base
(SANGB), Zoomed into Engineering with help from the U.S. Army Tank
Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC). In partnership
with National Engineers Week and Zoom TM, TARDEC associates from the Emerging
Technologies Team hosted a program of six events at SANGB that introduced
6- to 11-year-olds to engineering and helped them develop problem-solving
skills. Zoom™
designed these events to help students think “outside the box”
and apply engineering concepts in fun, kid-tested activities.
The six Zoom™ into Engineering events varied from studying
what makes the Hoop Glider fly to creating a car that is powered by air
in the Puff Mobile. The most popular event was the Egg Bungee Jump. In
this event the students tried to protect an egg by constructing a bungee
cord from various elastic materials. When dropped from five feet above
the ground, the egg had to reach within two inches or less of the ground.
This event was the most popular because the kids had fun even if their
attempt failed and the egg broke!
