Engineers Make a World of Difference

ZOOM Into Engineering National Outreach Summit

Summit details
Preliminary Agenda
Letter of Interest

For National Engineers Week 2002, Co-Chairs DuPont and the American Society of Civil Engineers are conducting a one-day National Outreach Summit on Monday, October 15, from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, in Washington, D.C. The purpose of this train-the-trainer workshop is to provide proper materials and training to prepare engineers to effectively bring the ZOOM into Engineering outreach program to the local community.

ZOOM into Engineering is a project designed to excite kids about engineering by combining Engineers Week’s cadre of enthusiastic volunteers with the fun, kid-tested, engineering activities from the hit PBS television show ZOOM™. The appeal of ZOOM and the chance to do activities with real engineers is sure to draw crowds of interested youngsters to all types of outreach events—from shopping malls and after school programs to libraries, science centers, and classrooms. Training will be conducted by WGBH’s ZOOM professional outreach staff.

If you are willing to:

  • Communicate with other local engineering organizations, i.e., a local EWeek coalition, and
  • Be a trainer in your community, then

We Want You!
We have selected the following areas as excellent sources of active EWeek participation and are seeking individuals from these areas to participate:

There is no fee for the training. Participants will receive a full day of training, lunch, and a ZOOM Into Engineering toolkit. Travel expenses will be the responsibility of your local EWeek coalition or your employer. We plan to extend an invitation to two to three people per area to attend the training.

Action Requested: Please fill out and send the attached Letter of Interest to the attention of Kelly Cunningham via e-mail to klcpr@bellatlantic.net or via fax to (703) 548-8090.

ZOOM into Engineering™ Outreach Summit
National Building Museum
October 15, 2001

What’s ZOOM into Engineering?
ZOOM into Engineering offers opportunities to excite kids about engineering by combining Engineers Week’s cadre of enthusiastic volunteers with the fun, kid-tested, engineering activities from the hit PBS television show ZOOM™. ZOOM is a nationally recognized name—to both kids and adults—that equates learning with fun. The appeal of ZOOM and the chance to do activities with real engineers is sure to draw crowds of interested youngsters to all types of outreach events—from shopping malls and after school programs to libraries, science centers, and classrooms.

What: This summit will provide all the necessary training and tools, including a train-the-trainer module, that you’ll need to create and implement ZOOM into Engineering events in your community.

Format: Structured as a full-day, interactive session, the summit will feature panel discussions with PBS outreach and youth group representatives, a workshop where you'll learn how to train your colleagues, a session where you can experiment with the hands-on activities, and planning time.

Who: Invited participants will represent the following groups: local EWeek coalitions, affiliate sponsor companies, engineering societies, and engineering schools. The training is designed to benefit those engineers who are, or are interested in becoming, actively involved in outreach. Participants should be willing to train their colleagues and other volunteers, as well as to take an active role in planning and implementing ZOOM Into Engineering events during EWeek (February 17-23, 2002), and at other times throughout the year. An effort will be made to recruit at least three participants from each of the 20 target cities.

Resources: Participants will receive hands-on activities for elementary and middle school kids, video, a PowerPoint training presentation, and more.
