Meet the Engineers:
Julie Pfau
Computer
engineer Julie Pfau is Global Initiative Manager for Agilent
Technologies in its Wireless Business Unit.
What
she does:
I work with high tech companies all over the world (Japan, Asia, Europe,
and the United States) to ensure their wireless networking products work
properly together. I make sure they have the right equipment to develop
and test their wireless products: keyboard, PC printers, video games,
cellular phones, wireless LAN connectivity cards that connect the PC to
the Internet, etc.
Education:
B.S. in Computer Engineering from Eastern Washington University.
Currently working on MBA at University of Colorado.
How
she prepared:
I researched several different educational possibilities and in doing
so, I found that computer engineering best fit my interest and skills.
While in college I participated in an internship at Agilent's test and
measurement division to better understand what different jobs a computer
engineer can perform. I started my career in research and development
and I realized that with my engineering degree I could also work in marketing
and a variety of other jobs.
What
she likes about electrical engineering:
I enjoy learning about new wireless technology innovations, such as wireless
networking for computers, and digital cameras for cell phones. I like
working with the technologies that impact and improve our day-to-day lives.
Also, I enjoy working with and learning about different cultures, and
through my job I have visited many exciting places
Biggest
on-the-job surprise:
I never thought that an engineering degree would enable me to travel the
world. With my job, I have been able to visit many high tech companies
in Japan, Israel, North America, South America, Europe, Korea and China.
Advice:
Study hard, travel, have fun and explore all opportunities presented to
you. Take advantage of the many opportunities to study and work in other
countries.
