Schumacher, P.E.
Job:
Civil engineer and President/Co-Owner of engineering company. Mystery
Writer. First mystery, Engineered for Murder, featured a female
structural engineer. Framework for Death, followed by Affirmative
Reaction, was nominated for an Anthony award for best novel. Rosewood's
Ashes will be published in May. Here's what National Engineers Week
says: "Schumacher engineers sly twists and turns in a modern-day scenario
constructed around an absorbing historical event."
Education:
New Mexico State University, B.S. Biology, M.S. Civil Engineering
Why engineering:
"As a biology major I set up an experiment in a wet lab which almost
got me electrocuted. I decided to take a basic course in electrical
engineering--I also liked the fact that being successful wasn't dependent
on how much information one memorized!"
Newest Adventure:
Participation in Alaska's Authors 2 Bush program. Authors visit Alaskan
Bush communities in February to speak to libraries and schools.

 Mary Cleave, PhD,
P.E.
Job:
Located at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, Cleave is Project Manager of SeaWiFS
(Sea-viewing, Wide-Field-of-View-Sensor), an ocean color sensor that monitors global
marine chlorophyll concentrations to help gage the health of our oceans. Cleave is also a
former astronaut, having flown two missions. In 1985 she was the flight engineer on the
Space Shuttle Atlantis.
Education:
M.S. in Microbial Ecology and Ph.D. in Civil/Environmental engineering from Utah State
University; B.S. in Biological Sciences, Colorado State University
Why engineering:
Cleave learned about engineering while working in an engineering laboratory.
