National Engineers Week Presents the New Faces of Engineering.

Jamie PadgettJamie Padgett, Ph.D.
Rice University
Nominated by the American Society of Civil Engineers

Jamie Padgett, assistant professor in civil and environmental engineering at Rice University, Houston, Texas, conducts research in the areas of infrastructure assessment and protection from hazards such as earthquakes, hurricanes, or aging.

For example, her research is currently evaluating how deterioration affects the seismic performance of bridges, and assessing effective rehabilitation measures.  Her work also aims to develop new models for predicting coastal bridge reliability and adapting critical infrastructure to climate change, i.e., improving safety, security, and reliability.

Dr. Padgett was an ASCE/TCLEE hurricane Katrina reconnaissance member of the team that evaluated the performance of the Gulf Coast transportation system, and is the faculty advisor for the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers.  She teaches graduate and undergraduate courses in structural analysis, bridge engineering and extreme events.

Dr. Padgett earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida, and doctorate in the same field from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia.
