Engineers Nominated by the National Engineers Week Foundation Diversity Council
Omolayo Badru
Nominated by the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering
Omolayo Badru, a project electrical engineer with Shell Exploration & Production Company in Houston, Texas, works with the Unconventional Oil group, a research and development group charged with developing new technologies to help unlock some of the largest and most difficult hydrocarbons in the U.S. and Canada. These projects require a strong technical understanding as they are approaches that have never been done before. Badru’s previous assignments at Shell include: instrumentation and electric support to a major fixed platform to increase production; power supply upgrade on floating production hub to improve uptime of critical safety and production systems; and new technologies to ensure the integrity of pipes that carry oil and gas from the sea to platforms.
Badru holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Houston and an MBA from the University of Florida. She is an active participant in Shell’s Diversity and Inclusiveness program and serves as the coordinator for her work group.

Jessica Mattis
Nominated by the Society of Women Engineers
Jessica Mattis works for General Motors as a lead senior manufacturing engineer at Pontiac Assembly, leading a team of engineers and resident suppliers in paint processing. Recently, she was working with paint team members to perform non-cyclical standardized work, and empowers operators to take ownership through communication and trust. Her leadership enabled a 2-year project culminating in being the first plant to decommission a final bake oven with annual savings of $750,000. Over the past several years, Mattis has collaborated with other engineers to save $4.5 million by optimization of ovens/air houses and $1 million avoidance through material reductions.
Mattis holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor, and recently was awarded her MBA from the University of Michigan-Flint.
