First Lieutenant Phillip James Hinson, E.I.T.
First Lieutenant Phillip James Hinson, E.I.T., is the Chief of Plans, 8th Civil Engineer Squadron, Kunsan AB, Republic of Korea. He is responsible for all civil engineer plans and guides relating to construction, sustainment, restoration and modernization of new and existing facilities and infrastructure. Additionally he oversees air installation management and long term plans relating to the future development of Kunsan AB. Prior to this assignment, he was the Chief of Maintenance Engineering at Keesler Air Force Base in Mississippi, where he conducted maintainability design reviews for $495 million in rapid reconstruction projects, and was responsible for executing 34 service contracts supporting the technical training of over 26,000 military students annually.
Hinson has also been active in the community, having led a team of 39 volunteers to provide all engineering support to a Boy Scout camp allowing 451 Scouts from three states to earn over 680 merit badges. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Ohio State University.

Melanie Kasper, P.E.
Melanie Kasper, P.E., works for S. Harris & Co. in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and is currently the project manager of several building restoration projects located along the beachfront community of Asbury Park, New Jersey. She has worked as the lead engineer to analyze and design a structural reinforcement system to increase the load capacity of The Lewis Store, the oldest retail store in the nation and has worked on over 20 projects involving structural analysis and stabilization of many buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. Prior to S. Harris & Co., Kasper gained valuable experience at Urban Engineers, Inc. serving as construction inspector, project manager, and designer for infrastructure improvement projects for the Center City District of Philadelphia.
Kasper holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Bucknell University and a master’s degree in civil engineering from Drexel University. She also trains and competes in triathlons, having finished eight races in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Virginia.

Ken Maschke, P.E.
Ken Maschke, P.E., a project engineer with Thornton Tomasetti in Chicago, Illinois, has exciting experiences working on new and existing buildings including repairing the roof of the Chicago Bears practice facility, installing a new façade over top of a wind damaged building in Indianapolis, and designing the tallest building in Cincinnati. He has worked in Denmark, where he maintained a bi-weekly blog about his experiences with both engineering tasks and adventures to Europe’s great engineering marvels. Maschke now speaks with prospective engineers about his career via a new blog and teaches structural engineering principles to prospective architects at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
Maschke holds both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in civil engineering from the University of Michigan. He has several publications to his credit and served as a technical contributor to the National Geographic Channel.

Theo Melo, E.I.T.
Theo Melo, a project construction manager with CH2M HILL in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, serves the City of Fort Lauderdale $691 million Capital Improvement Water Works 2011 Program in multiple capacities. As a construction manager, he is responsible for managing city infrastructure projects valued at $16.2 million in an urban environment. His projects require intense coordination with multiple government agencies, utility companies, contractors, and the general public. As the lead resident estimator, he also develops cost estimates and quantity take-offs for million dollar bid projects.
Melo, fluent in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, has spent summers helping to build one of only three public chemotherapy hospitals in Brazil and worked on Hurricane Katrina emergency response activities in New Orleans. He holds a bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Auburn University and is currently pursuing his MBA.
