Randall J. Urbance is a senior research engineer for General Motors Corporation in Warren, Michigan, working in the Research and Development Center.

Urbance received his graduate degree in materials engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology.  While there, he began developing “Technical Cost Modeling” (TCM) a methodology for business evaluation of new product designs and manufacturing process/systems.  He has applied these models to justify numerous strategic product and manufacturing initiatives at General Motors including:  global aluminum auto-body strategy, flexible body assembly business cases, and vehicle electronic architecture planning.   

Urbance served as the founding member and leader for the General Motors/MIT Materials and Manufacturing Systems Analysis Collaborative Research Lab, and has managed summer interns on various TCM projects.  He is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers and is a MATHCOUNTS coach.
