Engineers Make a World of Difference

Engineers Nominated by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers

Amanda Bogner, EIT Amanda Bogner, EIT

Amanda Bogner, EIT, is a mechanical designer at Leo A. Daly in Omaha, Nebraska.

She has worked on airports, offices, libraries, hospitals, research facilities, and schools. Most notable is the Great Ape Trust of Iowa, a research facility in Des Moines. The building’s mechanical system includes radiant heating, lake-source cooling and energy recovery.

Bogner is co-director of sustainability for Leo A. Daly’s Omaha office. She is a LEED® accredited professional and has provided LEED documentation services on several projects, such as the National Park Service office building in Omaha that will be the first LEED gold certified building in Nebraska. She recently co-authored an article for IFMA’s Facility Management Journal on sustainable indoor environmental quality strategies, which was published in the September/October issue.

Corey ChinnCorey Chinn

Corey Chinn is a mechanical engineer with Bechard & Associates in Poway, California. Chinn began work on a hospital in Colorado where he coordinated and assisted in the design of a replacement central boiler steam plant that provided the heating and cooling. All the pneumatic controls were replaced with new automated controls and the project was carried out through three phases to allow the hospital to continue to operate.

Currently Chinn is immersed in California’s stringent energy guidelines and requirements as well as the design and post-design aspects of multiple projects. These include a central plant renovation for a Marriott hotel, public school, and hospital tenant improvements. He designed a new library in which the owner should receive over $10,000 in incentives from the local utility, and a high-rise residential project that should also receive maximum incentives from the utility company. These incentives are tied to project efficiencies determined by calculations regarding the building envelope, mechanical equipment, and lighting provisions.

Ryan R. HogerRyan R. Hoger

Ryan R. Hoger, engineering and operations manager of the controls division for Temperature Equipment Co. in Lansing, Illinois, designs commercial direct digital control (DDC) systems.

DDC systems save time and money by enabling a building manager, for example, to make temperature adjustments from her desk as opposed to walking around a large building to some 300 thermostats. The systems can be integrated to the Internet allowing building operators to access their system from anywhere in the world 24 hours a day to view current operating conditions, see system alarms, and change set points and schedules. Integrating such systems to the Internet allows service companies to troubleshoot problems remotely. Many problems can be fixed without dispatching a technician.

David LeeDavid Lee

David Lee, project engineer with The Ballard Group Inc. in Lakewood, Colorado, designs mechanical systems for buildings to provide comfortable and safe environments for the occupants.

Lee began his career producing construction documents for large facilities such as the Lakeshore Athletic Club, an 80,000 square-foot fitness center in Broomfield, Colorado, and the Saint Francis Health and Wellness Center, a 130,000 square-foot fitness center with medical office tenant space, in Cape Girardeau, Missouri. He has played a key role in the success of several recreation and fitness center projects by coordinating mechanical system integration with architects, structural engineers, electrical engineers and interior designers. Lee designed heating, ventilating and air-conditioning systems for projects in six states with different building codes and health department requirements. Lee has been project engineer on some 19 projects. All of these projects include areas with specific mechanical requirements, such as fitness rooms, running tracks, natatoriums, locker rooms, aerobics rooms, administration and office areas, tenant finish areas, and kitchen/café areas.
