Engineers Make a World of Difference

Engineers Nominated By US Army Corps of Engineers

Carolyn Roos, Ph.D.Carolyn Roos, Ph.D.

Carolyn Roos, Ph.D., mechanical engineer, designs special hazards fire extinguishing systems for hydropower facilities.

Working at the Portland District’s Hydroelectric Design Center, Roos’ numerous design projects involving complex calculations include hoists; hydroturbine efficiency testing; heating, ventilating and air condition design; piping design; hydraulic forces over spillways; hydraulic downpull on gates in waterways; and stresses in rotating machinery. She served as the on-site technical inspector during construction of a fish bypass system. Roos provides valuable technical mentoring to junior engineers. In addition to her substantial engineering responsibilities, she is the Portland District Chair for National Engineers Week, hosting some 120 high school students from the Portland area for a day of activities on February 24, 2004.

Elizabeth M. Hall Elizabeth M. Hall

Elizabeth M. Hall, an electrical engineer for the Hydroelectric Design Center, US Army Corps of Engineers in Portland, Oregon, volunteered in 2002 to serve in Afghanistan.

Hall served in Afghanistan with the Fort Worth District Forward Engineer Support and Augmentation team until April 2003. Then she accepted a volunteer mission with the Corps Dam Safety Inspection Team in Iraq where she used her expertise to assist in the effort to restore and assess electrical power capacity to these critical areas of the world.
