Tyco Electronics Corporation
Tyco Electronics is a global leader in the manufacture of electrical and electronic components, and recognized as the world’s largest supplier of passive electronics components. A segment of Tyco International, Ltd., Tyco Electronics employs 92,000 people worldwide. With sales of over $12 billion, Tyco Electronics is the largest of Tyco’s businesses.
Tyco Electronics had its beginnings as AMP Incorporated, which was a long-time leading maker of connectors and related products – components found in virtually any finished electrical or electronic product from the simplest toaster to the most sophisticated computer. During those years, the company grew rapidly and expanded around the globe, first establishing operations in France in 1952 and Japan in 1956, and then expanding throughout Western Europe and Asia.
In 1999, AMP merged with Tyco, and soon thereafter, the company began an aggressive expansion initiative. The combination of AMP, plus the acquisition of Raychem Corporation, formed the basis of Tyco Electronics. Other acquisitions broadened the company’s product portfolio to encompass electronics and electrical component products in 23 distinct categories. Today, that portfolio includes not only connectors, but also relays, fiber optics, wireless components, wire and cable, and complete power systems. That translates into well over 400,000 different part numbers. There is no other single supplier that can match the array of products and services that Tyco Electronics offers. As examples of product depth, the company offers over two dozen different products for use in digital cameras; and for automotive applications, well over 400 million relays are manufactured each year.
Manufacturing facilities are deployed in 29 countries around the globe.
Technology Leadership
As technology advances relentlessly, Tyco Electronics continues to invest heavily in RD&E to ensure a robust stream of new products for next-generation electronics equipment. Development of new high-speed interconnects and micro-miniature components are aimed at satisfying customers’ needs to package more performance in smaller products. As electronics proliferate in automobiles, Tyco Electronics is developing new components such as battery disconnect switches, radar sensors, GPS/Cellular antennas, fuse-relay boxes and inductive systems for ABS. For the aerospace market, the company supplies complete electrical distribution panels – incorporating contactors, power controllers and relays - for helicopters and fighter aircraft.
For public safety radio systems using Internet Protocol (IP) based technology, Tyco Electronics’ wireless unit, M/A-COM, has developed OpenSky and NetworkFirst technologically-advanced communications systems that enable police, fire and other emergency first-responders to communicate with each other, linking formerly disparate legacy systems together.
