Richard C. Peters
Chief Manufacturing Engineer at The Timken Co.
& former President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers
Richard C. Peters, chief manufacturing engineer at The Timken Company, served as 2004 President of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and is currently serving as Chair of Engineers Week.
In his leadership role at The Timken Co., a manufacturer of tapered roller bearings, in Bucyrus, Ohio, Peters manages the engineering and maintenance departments for the two Bucyrus district facilities, directing both staffs in optimizing equipment processes, productivity and quality.
Peters has been active at the local, regional, and international levels of SME since he joined the Society in 1979. During his year as president, he led the launch of several bold initiatives, including a new Technical Community Network and a new Member Engagement Initiative which realigned the volunteer member infrastructure, helping to improve the technical engagement opportunities and resources for members while driving decision-making to more appropriate levels within the Society’s volunteer network. He also worked closely with other board members and the SME staff to develop a new five-year strategic plan for the Society.
Peters has also served on SME’s Professional Licensure Committee and remains active in SME’s certification activities. In addition to his roles with SME and Engineers Week, Peters is also active with Science Fair, MathCounts, and other student and community programs including Engineer-For-A-Day and Rotary International.
Peters holds degrees in mechanical engineering, a bachelor’s degree from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, and a master’s degree from the University of Akron, Akron, Ohio.
