Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day 2010 is celebrated Thursday, February 18th. That date is simply a rallying point. We plan to record participation as long as organizations report to us. Some organizations will participate on that day but given professional schedules and school breaks, many will take place just before and just after Engineers Week 2010. Check this page often for current events, and visit the archives for even more participation ideas.

Business

Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Rockwell Collins
Rockwell Collins will be hosting 80 middle school girls at our corporate headquarters in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for our 8th annual 'Introduce a Girl to Engineering' event. Each young woman will be paired with a female engineering mentor for the day and will have the opportunity to visit a variety of engineering labs including our Synthetic Vision Lab, Flight Decks, and Testing Facilities. Girls and their mentors will also have lunch and hear speakers including our Senior Vice President of Engineering and Technology, Nan Mattai. West Chicago, Illinois, Siemens Industry, Inc.
On Friday, February 19, 2010, Siemens Industry, Inc. in West Chicago, IL will hold the sixth annual Introduce a Girl to Engineering event from 4-6:30PM. The event is for girls in 5th through 11th grade and will be hostessed by woman engineers. The purpose of the event is to help girls learn about an exciting and challenging career in engineering. Girls who attend will complete several FUN experiments associated with different engineering disciplines. Bucks County Energy provides educational outreach initiatives through its 501 (3)(c)nonprofit, GreeniacLife.com offering educational presentations on energy efficiency and solar technologies in engineering, energy management software systems, smart energy and more. Bucks County Energy outreach operates in Bucks County and Eastern Pennsylvania School Districts, public, private and Vocational High Schools, their parents, counselors and other educators. The Executive Director also coordinates Green Energy Workforce Certification Trainings, offers a newsletter, hosts educational events that benefit local housing development corporations, seniors and woman's groups. We have included "Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day" to several educational programs for girls and will conduct outreach to at least 400 girls in Eastern Pa. gail.mcmaster@verizon.net

Chandler, Arizona. Intel Latino Network
For the past five years, the Latina Outreach Working Group (part of the Intel Latino Network) in Arizona has hosted "Hermanas: Design Your Future" conference reaching over 900+ Hispanic female students and introducing them to engineering. For 2010, the plan is to target 300 girls in grades 6-12, and the conferences are scheduled to be held at Estrella Mountain Community College on February 20th (for middle schools) and March 10th (for high schools). Kihei, Hawaii. Maui Economic Development Board (MEDB)
MEDB™’s Women In Technology Project will host Maui’s 10th annual “Introduce a Girl to Engineering Day” event on Thursday, February 18, 2010. Middle school girls will be given an opportunity for a half-day of job-shadowing with an engineer and fun, hands-on engineering-based activities. The event is free and open to 7th & 8th grade girls. Lunch & refreshments will be provided. The WIT Project is also expanding its outreach by arranging presentations by local engineers at Maui County middle schools. This local program is made possible through the Maui Economic Development Board’s Women in Technology Project, in partnership with the County of Maui, and the Maui Chapter of the Hawaii Society of Professional Engineers. This year, the Transit Museum is recognizing the key role that women engineers play throughout the MTA's agencies. Hear first-hand from representatives of various programs about their goals, ambitions, and experiences in the MTA workforce. Panelists include Deborah Chin, a Design Manager with NYC Transit CPM – Signals and Systems Program, and Shirley Moy, Design Manager, NYC Transit Capital Program Management - Stations Program.

We will be hosting the "Get Moving with Get WISE (Women in Science and Engineering) Day" on campus for 250 6th-8th grade females from the 19 local school districts. The day will include group and individual engineering activities, a keynote speaker from the Biomedical Engineering Department, and female role models to interact with throughout the day. Engineering EXPO at USF is a huge event for our college celebrating National Engineers Week. Usually held in 2nd week of February, this event features student organizations, and people from industry showing off their stuff to the Tampa Bay community. Friday and Saturday has many students who come in field trips from the local schools to check out engineering at USF. Its a great way to get kids interested in engineering as a potential field. This year, SWE is running a parallel event called Engineering the Court. It’s purpose is to introduce female basketball players to engineering.
