| Connecting the World to Engineering Teleconference II The second in a series of Connecting the World to Engineering teleconferences was held on Tuesday, March 1st with James B. Porter, Jr., Vice President – DuPont Engineering and Operations and Chief Engineer, speaking on the topic, “Tips for a Successful Transition to the Working World.” Victoria Rockwell, Senior Manager of Investment Development for Air Liquide, representing 2005 Engineers Week co-chair, the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, was moderator. Engineering students from Michigan State, Penn State, Purdue, the University of Puerto Rico at Mayaguez, and the University of Toronto participated in the March 1st teleconference. Porter’s presentation highlighted 10 Tips for making the transition from school to employment by proper preparation and managing a successful start in the working world. Discussion of how to build technical and people skills is followed by hints on stabilizing personal life, understanding the company, its employees, and one’s responsibilities and priorities, finding a mentor, improving strengths and weaknesses, and how to never stop learning about co-workers and oneself.
